Rio Tinto’s newest state-of-the-art Iron Ore Mine in the Pilbara region of WA was on the lookout for a robust engineered solution for overhead truck fill for its Autonomous 789 CAT fleet.
Requirements & Challenges
Based in the heart of the harsh & arid Pilbara, in Gudai-Darri /Koodaideri, Rio Tinto needed a water truck fill solution that was up to the challenge of the environment & the challenges of operating in the unchartered territory.
Running a full Autonomous fleet of large mine trucks, the system had to be able to withstand high wind loads, large flows, and be highly adaptable to meet with any changing conditions as they navigated the path to Autonomy.
Dubbed “the mine of the future” Rio Tinto needed a water truck fill solution that matched the rest of the high-tech mine.
Mine sites are dangerous places and no task more dangerous than installing “standard” standpipe systems, with working under suspended loads with heavy parts, working at heights & associated risks such as lacerations and crushing. Undertaking this kind of high-risk work was a major concern for the mine.
With high iron ore pricing prevalent Rio Tinto also needed a reliable, engineered solution quickly.

The Results
Upon receiving favourable feedback and go ahead from our Rio Tinto, Liquimech’s robust water truck fill, standpipe, system was fabricated, trial tested , third party verified and delivered to site within a 4 week time period. In the height of lockdowns due to the covid pandemic, widespread supply issues & extended lead times of third party services such as galvanising was a massive credit to the Liquimech team.
Due to the Liquimech patented & proprietary design, contractors were able to assemble the standpipe system safely, easily and efficiently within a 3 hour period.
